The Highwayman

One of my favourite poems is 'The Highwayman' by Alfred Noyes. In the version I have, the illustrations are by Charles Keeping whose work I also admire. The combination is electric.

Here I have the opening illustration and the first verse for you to muse upon:

'The Highwayman'

The wind was a torrent of darkness among the gusty trees,
The moon was a ghostly galleon tossed upon cloudy seas.
The road was a ribbon of moonlight over the purple moor,
And the highwayman came riding-
Riding-riding-
The highwayman came riding, up to the old inn-door.

Alfred Noyes

I have to admit, that I haven't read this poem. However the first is so atmospheric, that it makes me want to read the rest. I also love the modd that the illustration creates.

Electric is right! I love that illustration and the poem is great. I'm thinking of those purple moors...

It does create a wonderful mood with its imagery.

A very beautiful and somewhat nostalgic illustration, and an equally beautiful poem.

I love this poem. The illustration is creates a mood of desolation.
